Summer Reading Program 2018

Lonsdale Public Library
Summer Reading Program
Friday, June 8-Saturday, July 21

Studies show that kids who continue to read during the summer retain more of their skills and excel not just in reading but in all subjects.  Our experience shows that reading is awesome and kids who read or are read to have more adventures!  Ages 0-18 are welcome to sign up to win prizes just for reading and to come to any or all of our fun activities.

This year we will have three types of reading logs: pre-readers, readers, and teens.  Each will feature not just reading but other cool things to do.  Finish ten tasks and bring in your log for a prize.  This year we will have four levels of really cool prizes.  Finish all four and you will be entered into a drawing for one of our fantastic grand prize bundles.  Sign up any time during the program.  Reading logs must be returned by 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 21 in order to be entered.  Thanks to Subway and Casey’s for providing prizes!

In case that’s not enough incentive, if 100 kids finish all four levels, you can all bring your squirt guns and water balloons to the closing day ice cream social and give your library staff a good soaking.  (We reserve the right to limit the time, distance and water pressure allowed.)

Summer reading program update

Here we are halfway through summer reading 2017.  We have 269 young people signed up from ages less than 1 to 17.  We’ve already given away more that 200 prizes and had 8 enterprising young readers who have finished all five levels!

We’ve also done lots of fun activities:

We learned traditional Czech and Slovak dances from the Domácí Czech Folk Dancers.

We painted with marbles.

We met Harper, a service dog in training.

We made robots out of boxes and tinfoil.

We learned about all kinds of reptiles…

…and made friends with a boa constrictor.

We built marble mazes out of cardboard and drinking straws.

And that’s only the first half.  We’ve got lots more to come.

Friday, July 7th at 1:00 pm: Mad Science MN presents Phantastic Physics

And you may want to stick around afterwards, because we’re making crafts at 2:00.

Domáci Czech Dancers

Domáci Czech Dancers
Wednesday, June 14, 1:00-2:00

We are delighted to welcome back the Domáci Czech Folk Dancers, a local group of young people who interpret traditional Czech dances, complete with authentic music and costumes.  Kids who attend may even get a chance to learn a dance of their own.  All ages are welcome, even grown-ups!

Also, feel free to stick around and join us for the first of our weekly summer reading craft sessions at 2:00.  Our theme for the first week is art, so plan on making mosaics and painting with marbles.  All events and supplies are free.  Projects designed for ages 5-10, but everyone is welcome.

Pizza Party

Summer reading arrived as usual with a big pizza party full of food, games, and fun!  We had food, did some science experiments, played some games, and signed up for the summer reading program!  There’s lots more summer reading fun to come, so come back soon!

Special thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible: the Lonsdale Lions, who come back every year to cook and serve pizzas, all the many grown-up and teen (and younger!) volunteers who helped keep everything moving smoothly and the fun happening, and all the parents and caregivers who took the time to bring the kids in.  We couldn’t do it without you!

We started the day with a special outdoor storytime with really big books.

Everybody got in on the action.

We ate a lot of pizza!

The Lonsdale Lions did all the cooking and serving.  Thank you, Lions!  (Hey, is that they mayor?)

Eating pizza with your friends is good!

You know what else is good?  Building things out of Legos and making crafts!

And making slime is pretty great!

But best of all is signing up to get awesome free prizes just for reading or having someone read to you!

Don’t forget: summer reading runs through July 22nd, so sign up and start keeping track of those minutes.
