Summer Reading Program
June 9-July 21, 2023
Reading program with fun activities for ages 0-18. Everyone who signs up gets a free book! Finish your reading log and register to enter a drawing for one of our great grand-prize baskets. Journals must be submitted by July 21st to qualify.
All events are at the library unless specified otherwise.
Friday, June 9, 12:00: Cookout, JAYCEE PARK
We start the season right with hotdogs, chips and lemonade at Sticha Park. (Need directions? Pick up a map at the library.) Sign up for the reading program and choose your free book! Play games and make new friends! All ages.
Wednesday, June 14, 1:00: Siama’s Congo Music
Siama Matuzungidi plays intricate, rhythmic guitar and traditional African instruments while Dallas Johnson encourages everyone to sing along to happy songs in Kikongo, Lingala & English. They share stories that bring Siama’s rural homeland to life. This heart-warming program is designed for kids and families, but enjoyed by all, so don’t miss it! All ages.
Thursday, June 22, 1:00: Afoutayi, TCU Lonsdale Elementary School
This interactive performance is a vibrant educational tool filled with dance, music, drumming, storytelling and history. Learn about Haitian cultural heritage the fun way with songs in Creole and French languages with live drumming accompaniment. Enjoy as dancers engage in a playful, spontaneous interchange with the audience. All ages.
Tuesday, June 27, 6:30: Stuffed Animal Sleepover
Join us for a special evening storytime at 6:30, then drop off your stuffed friend to spend the night having adventures in the library. Pick them up the next morning and receive a report complete with pictures. Best for ages 3-8.
Thursday, June 29, 1:00: Local Author Gina Kammer
This Lonsdale author will read from her Norse Myths series. The group will decide what choices to make, which will shape the adventure. Will you succeed? There will be time to ask questions and buy books. Best for ages 8-12.
Thursday, July 6—Saturday, July 8 (multiple sessions): Pop Star Escape Room
Your favorite pop star is in town for a big concert and you won backstage passes! When there’s a lockdown you find yourself trapped in her dressing room with a bomb. The mad bomber is convinced that pop music is rotting our brains, so he set up a series of clever puzzles. If you can solve them all in 45 minutes, you can save the day! You must pre-register, up to 5 per session. Best for ages 10+.
Wednesday, July 12, 1:00: Remarkable Reptiles
A perennial favorite, local reptile expert Jim Gerholdt, will be back to visit with some of his friends. And his friends are snakes, lizards and turtles! Kids will learn about these fascinating creatures, and maybe even get to pet a boa constrictor! All ages.
Friday, July 21, 6:30: Ice Cream Social / New Prague Community Band, Sticha Park
Cap off the summer reading season with free ice cream and music! Enjoy the music of the New Prague Community Band! Please bring your own chairs and blankets. Everyone is welcome even if they weren’t part of the summer reading program, so invite your family, friends and neighbors! All ages.
Activities will be available all week or while supplies last.
A fun craft to do at the library when you visit. Best for ages 3-8.
A different fun craft all packaged up to take home and do when you like. Best for ages 6-12.
As always, we will have cool fun sheets and coloring pages to take home. All ages.
