Summer Reading Program 2019

SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2019

Friday, June 7 – Friday, July 19

Our annual reading program for ages 0-18 is back!  There are a lot of good, responsible reasons to keep reading during the summer.¹  But the important part is that reading is fun, and it’s even more fun to get rewards and participate in awesome activities at the same time!

How it works:  Starting June 7th, you can register and pick up a reading log.  We have special logs for readers, pre-readers and teens. Complete the tasks on your reading log. For every ten tasks you earn a prize.  You can collect four prizes total, plus finish all the levels to enter a drawing for your choice of our awesome grand prize baskets.  All book logs must be returned by 6 pm on July 19 in order to enter drawing.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Friday, June 7, 10:30/11:00: Pizza Party

Come at 10:30 for a special outdoor story time, then enjoy free pizza and lemonade starting at 11:00.  We will also have activities going on inside and out, so plan to stick around for a while.  All ages.

Thursday, June 20, 1:00, 2:15, 3:30: STARLAB Planetarium

Experience a real inflatable planetarium to learn about stars and constellations.  Because space is limited, there will be three sessions.  NOTE: This program will take place at Lonsdale Elementary School.  There is no charge, but you must pre-register at: https://www.tcu2905.us/page/4231.  Be sure to select Lonsdale and take note of your session time.  All ages.

Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00: Escape Room

You must solve puzzles to escape and save the day in this space-themed adventure.  Pre-registration strongly recommended.  Best for ages 10-14.

Your friend and mine, Jim Gerholdt, will be back with his snakes, lizards and turtles.  All ages.

¹ Serious facts for grown-ups: Multiple studies show that children who read regularly over the summer break experience less of a “summer slide,” and are better prepared to keep up to grade level in all subjects.  This effect is cumulative and even stronger in disadvantaged children.  For more, visit http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/summer/research.htm.
